A small Japanese-style guesthouse set inside two and a half acres of seriously tended tropical garden in the Redland, the farm belt between Miami and the Everglades. The garden is the show here — koi ponds, mature trees, dense planting that the owners have clearly worked on for decades — and you have your own entrance and parking, so it doesn't feel like staying in someone's spare room. Use it as a base for the quiet side of South Florida: the Royal Palm entrance to Everglades National Park is about half an hour, and you're minutes from the Fruit & Spice Park and the Robert Is Here fruit stand for milkshakes on the way back. Air-conditioned and comfortable inside, which matters out here. Mosquitoes come with the territory at dusk; walk the garden in the morning instead, when the koi are active and nobody else is around.
