The only tropical rainforest in the US national forest system, no passport required for Americans.
El Yunque is the shortcut answer for Americans who want real rainforest without a passport, currency change or phone plan drama. It rains over 200 inches a year on the peaks, the coquí frogs sing all night, and waterfall swimming holes sit fifteen minutes from your bed. Río Grande and Luquillo, on the forest's northern edge, hold most of the good stays.
The interior mountains are the deeper cut. Around Utuado and the Toro Negro forest you'll find casitas and domes hanging over river canyons, coffee farms, and the karst country of caves and mogotes — far fewer tourists, noticeably cheaper, and a better look at everyday Puerto Rico.
Stays rebuilt since Hurricane María tend to be solid: concrete construction, solar backup, cisterns. Luquillo Beach and the Fajardo bioluminescent bay are both within half an hour of the El Yunque stays, which makes this the rare jungle trip that doubles as a beach trip with zero logistics.
