The fun one. This treehouse in Mountain View — rainforest country between Hilo and Volcano — was featured on HGTV's Tiny Paradise, and you get to it by walking a swinging bridge through the canopy. There's a zip line on the property, the structure is built around living native ohia lehua trees, and unlike most Hawaii treehouses it sleeps four, so you can actually bring the kids (they will talk about the bridge for years). At its usual price point it's also one of the best-value unique stays on the island. Mountain View is exactly what it sounds like: a quiet rural district that gets serious rainfall, which keeps the ferns enormous and means you should expect showers most days, usually brief. Hilo is about 25 minutes for groceries and beaches; the national park is about the same in the other direction. Rustic but solid, and the hosts have the systems dialed.
